Children look up to and rely on their parents. You are their teachers so it is critical to know how to handle situations. The biggest setback parents have is not or mis communicating with their children. Communicating with your children is one of the more important and beneficial things you can do for your children.
By teaching good social skills you are guiding your child to social success. There will always be things to worry about however; your child’s social-emotional well-being is the most important concern most parents have today. Ease your worries and stress by following 10 ways you and your child can benefit from good communication skills.’
1. Support their relationships. Solid friendships reduce behavior problems; improve grades and their overall outlook towards school. A healthy and mutual friendship can play a huge role in their social success in life.
2. Use books to back up what you discuss. When you have books around to reinforce what you are trying to communicate and vice versa, it give you somewhere to fall back on and also in the children’s perception it’s not something the evil parent just made up.
3. When conflict arises, discuss the strategies to resolve it together. Everyone messes up. How you deal with it as a parent will be the deciding factor as to how the argument/discussion plays out. Be a great role model and speak without yelling, name calling and belittling.
4. Talk about emotions. Have a list to help younger children identify the emotion they are feeling. This equips children to handle conflicts and expression later in life. This is a necessary tool to resolve disagreements without losing their temper.
5. Encourage your children to bring their friends home. When your children know that you support their friendships it inspires them to make friends and helps them feel confident. This is another way to observe what kind of relationships you child has. Are they a good influence on each other; how do they interact; or are they being taken advantage of.
6. Get to know your children’s parents. This will reinforce positive interactions and will be another way for you to role model great communication and behavior. This is a way to support your child as well.
7. Discuss friendships together. By encouraging your child to talk about their friends and tell you anything is another way to open up the communication tunnel. You as a parent can share your own funny stories which help you to seem more human in your child’s eyes.
8. Promote their self-esteem. How important does your child feel? Do you know? If your child feels safe, loved, comfortable and accepted by adults then your child will likely have great self-esteem. As a parent it is your job to ensure that your child feels happy and accepted at every stage of their life.
9. Encourage your child to talk to you when they have problems with their friends. Knowing your child’s friends comes in handy at this point. Talk, talk, talk. This doesn’t mean talk to or talk down to; communication is more listening than anything. If you allow your child to talk and you actively listen the connection and communication you will have will be astounding.
10. If all your great attempts fail, be the parent and take responsibility and reach out for help. You are doing your child the biggest disservice by ignoring or making excuses for not getting the support you require to help you child become the best person he or she can be. Remember it is your responsibility. If you don’t care about your child…who will?
The best advice to all parents is to practice and practice what you preach. Be a great role model and teach your child how to effectively communicate. This is something they will use for the rest of their lives. Show respect and you will be rewarded beyond your dreams.
