Parenting That is Effective
By Jennie Gandhi

Parenting is a vulnerable experience. Caring for children automatically makes us responsible and we are more cautious about our actions and decisions. Children view parents as their role modes. They actually imitate our actions whether good or bad. When children play family games with their friends, they actually go on to emulate their parents or siblings. Their mannerisms and dialogues which are spontaneous at that time mirror our daily actions. Most times children correct us and are our teachers.

Communication is the base for any kind of relationship. Times are changing and kids have a great exposure to outside life. The facilities that existed in our childhood were restricted owing to economic reasons or limited sources of entertainment. Our goals as a child were much different but kids these days are very much aware of opportunities. Communicating to the child helps us discipline them. Being overly critical may not be beneficial for their growth, but children need to be taught and corrected.

Repeated arguments with teenagers makes them rebel and hence a parent has to initially sympathize with the child. Teenage is a very confusing time and children are enticed towards a plethora of options. They are more attached to their friends and love experimenting with material life. It is important for parents to understand that this is a phase in life and all is subject to change. Our responsibility remains in explaining to them about the dangers and accepting their shortcomings. Once this is effectively communicated, deviations in the same should not be allowed.

Parents are highly pressed for time especially a working mother who is constantly juggling with routine household work, PTA meetings and corporate targets. Asking help from children is a wonderful way to make them independent. Initially this may seem as task for them, but later as routine sets in they get responsible. Instructions to children should always be polite as they do not like to be ordered. Quality time with children is important. Kids love their parents perusing through their art books or origami work. Praise does wonders and hugs works as a miracle. It boosts their self esteem and they feel loved.
