Organic Food For Our Children?
By Justine Lee
With increasing health awareness worldwide, there has been an increase in demand and availability of organic foods. What exactly is organic food? It is basically foods that are grown or produced without the use of pesticides, artificial additives, hormones or other chemicals.
Some of the benefits are as follows:
• Food in its purest form. Without pesticides, artificial additives, hormones and chemicals, we are consuming them without any worries on our long term health.
• Better taste. Of cause, this is highly debatable. My mum is a firm advocate nevertheless. Food without pesticides and the harmful chemicals is surely fresher and tastier.
• Environmentally friendly. We can’t deny that planet Earth has suffered considerably when we use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, preservatives and chemicals. Organic foods have none of these harmful components, it’s a way of going green.
• Healthier lifestyle. Well, without the bad ingredients involved in growing foods, it’s rather straight forward that kids can live happier and healthier
There again, organic foods have not completely won over critics.
• Cost. In an era of rising cost of living, some people argued that prices of organic foods are simply too steep to be worth considering.
• Immune System. Some nutritionists have argued that simply giving infants or young children only organic food will in fact affect their long term immune system. It may result in their bodies having a lower body resistance as they are not exposed to the pesticides and chemicals.
• Not 100% organic. It is rather rare to obtain foods that are 100% organic. Even if they are available, the quantity is not very large and is not easily available anywhere.
Here lies the pros and cons of organic foods for your child. Does our generations have lots of organic foods during our time? I bet we didn’t but we turnt out fine afterall right? Then again, there is nothing wrong in wanting the best for our children and organic foods could be one of the ways. As parents, you’ll definitely know what’s best for your child.
